Waste not: How LED Lighting Technology reduces energy waste

Waste not: How LED Lighting Technology reduces energy waste

LED lighting

LED Lighting Technology

Here at Earthtronics, we’re big fans of earth day. As evidenced by our name, our passion for protecting mother Earth is at the core of our operations. Since 2007, we’ve been developing innovative, energy-efficient LED lighting products. Our products provide a positive economic and environmental impact for our customers. We provide lighting distributors, contractors and resellers with a mix of high-quality LED lighting products that live up to the statement “Where Efficiency Meets Innovation.”

But why LEDs? Because these technologically advanced bulbs and fixtures last thousands of hours longer and consume much less energy than incandescent and fluorescent lighting products. We won’t go so far as to call them ‘super lights,’ but you get the picture.

Energy saved

In a 2020 Cnet article, “LED lights can help save the planet, one bulb at a time,” Ry Crist writes:

“According to the DOE projections, the energy saved from LEDs could equal 348 terawatt hours by 2027. That’s an awful lot of electricity we won’t need anymore — equivalent to roughly 8.5% of the total amount of energy generated in the US in 2019, or the annual energy output of 44 large-sized power plants.”

Crist goes on to express these numbers in carbon emissions, writing “…the projected 348 TWh of energy that we’ll save from using LEDs by 2027 adds up to about 137 million metric tons of CO2 we won’t expel into the atmosphere.”

By simply swapping existing fixtures and bulbs with LED products, individuals and businesses can not only use less energy, but release less toxic gas into our environment. That’s a win-win-win for us here at Earthtronics.

Non-toxic waste

Sustainability is also top of mind when manufacturing LED lights and fixtures. In an article, “5 Reasons Why You Should Switch to LED lights” on Bioenergy Consult, Salman Zafar writes, “Efficient disposal is also what makes it environment-friendly. It alleviates the toxic waste produced by the material composition of traditional lighting…The absence of mercury makes it easier to use and to dispose of.”

This means that, instead of throwing away thousands of quickly-used bulbs containing harmful metals into dumps all over the country, fewer bulbs — and those made of less harmful materials — are discarded over time.

Cool…to the touch

You have probably noticed that LED lights are much cooler than traditional incandescent lights. This is because, in addition to using less energy overall to create light, LEDs are also much more efficient in putting to work the energy they do use. According to a UK Energy Lighting post, “How Does LED Lighting Help the Environment?”:

“Standard LED bulbs can be up to 80% more energy efficient than conventional bulbs, and waste far less energy than other styles of lighting. Fluorescent lights, for example, convert around 95% of the energy they produce into heat and only 5% into light. LED lights, however, convert 95% of their energy into light and with only 5% being wasted as heat. This means that LEDs require less power than regular forms of lighting, so obviously the less energy they require, the more positive the effect on the environment.”

LED lights were created with energy efficiency and environmental impact in mind. So by choosing an LED bulb, a fixture or both, you are helping reduce energy waste and contribute to a cleaner, healthier planet.
