It’s known that lighting can depict the mood and set-the-tone in almost any situation. This is particularly well known for restaurants, workout facilities, and entertainment settings ideal for a night-on-the-town. But, who would have thought that lighting in the classroom could impact children’s education and overall performance in school?
Research shows that proper lighting can increase test scores:
A study published in the Optics Express Journal believes there is a direct correlation between classroom performance and proper lighting. The study tested what type of lighting fit common classroom activities best. These activities include test-taking, reading and recess. Types of lighting were measured by CCTs, or correlated color temperatures.
Two fourth-grade classrooms were tested. Each classroom contained of 27 students. At the time of the study, students were taking a math exam:
- The lighting in classroom #1 had CCT capabilities of 3500K, 5000K, and 6500K.
- The lighting in classroom #2 was standard fluorescent lighting.
Results showed that students in classroom #1 scored higher on their math exams than students in classroom #2, specifically when the classroom was lit with 6500K lighting (consists of blue undertones that closely imitates natural daylight). Further results showed that 3500K lighting (includes yellow hues) would be ideal for recess activities, and 5000K (standard) lighting would be ideal for reading activities.
The study’s co-author Dr. Hyeon-Jeong Suk reflected on his findings, “Such benefits of lighting have not yet been fully adopted in the educational environment. At the beginning of our research, we were shocked by the fact that the lighting in facilities in educational environments were much poorer than we’d anticipated.”
Proper lighting can Reduce Energy & Educational Costs:
At higher education institutions, lighting accounts for nearly 25% of the institution’s energy costs. However, this is challenging to measure without a lighting management system, which allows you to monitor lighting energy consumption in various areas. The system also helps you see what areas your lighting energy consumption can be decreased. This can be by including detection sensors, timed switches, or daylight and dimming lighting options. By incorporating these low-energy options, institutions can reduce their energy costs and overall consumption.
Proper Lighting Increase Students’ Safety:
By offering various lighting options, the safety of students can also be improved. Modern lighting options are more dependable and equipped for a variety of situations. For example, a well illuminated area makes individuals feel welcomed and provides a sense of safety. With modern lighting options you will never have to worry about a lack of lighting—day or night—which, could attract troublesome, problematic and dangerous situations.
