Exterior LED Lighting Options for Pedestrian Lighting
Common spaces, such as street sidewalks and pathways, within municipalities large and small, have a few things in common: they’re pedestrian friendly, they’re clean, and they’re safe. The key to achieving all three of these attributes is installing the proper lighting to light the way.
Many of the street lights and post lights placed along streets and sidewalks illuminate at dusk and help keep people safe and visible throughout the night. The downside is that often when retrofitting the light doesn’t shine down towards a specific area, but out, spilling into the environment. This contributes to nighttime light pollution, or sky glow, a combination of lighting from streetlights, parking lots, malls, office buildings, stadiums, and other structures that brighten the night skies. It happens when a poorly designed light fixture retrofit project reflects light up or out instead of at their designated targets.
Luckily, municipalities can reduce the occurrence of light pollution and save money with the right kind of LEDs from EarthTronics.
High Lumen HID Replacements
Our High Lumen HID Replacement bulbs were developed with “petals” that customers can peel down to point or redirect the street lighting, providing better visibility and less light pollution. These high lumen LED lamps provide 5040 lumens (36 watts) and 7560 lumens (54 watts) in 4000K with full omnidirectional illumination. These HID replacement are ideal for retrofit opportunities in exterior post lighting. The High Lumen product family also includes product solutions for 1600 lumen to 14,400 lumen to properly retrofit wall packs, yard lights and parking lots. They can easily be placed in enclosed fixtures and are damp rated IP64 with a 50,000 hour rated life. True darkness around common spaces like sidewalks and urban pathways can become a thing of the past, without increasing a city’s light pollution, with these HID Replacement EarthBulbs.
Street Lighting Tips
As you plan out a lighting design that’s right for your city, keep these tips in mind.
- The higher the street light or post, the higher wattage your bulb should be to provide adequate illumination down below.
- Lower wattage lights should be used to light walkways and waist-high lights.
- When using more decorative street lighting for sidewalks, festive common spaces, or neighborhoods, go for a bulb with mid-wattage. They are functional of course, but not true street lights, and if they aren’t placed very high, the mid-wattage HID replacement bulb is all you need for proper illumination.
From a cost and efficiency standpoint, it makes sense to make the switch to LEDs for exterior pedestrian lighting. Although there is a higher upfront cost, the bulbs last much longer, use a fraction of the energy compared to incandescent and sodium lighting and don’t contain materials like mercury – common in fluorescent lighting – that can harm the environment.
